Multi-layer cylinder head gaskets
Multi-layer steel (MLS) cylinder head gaskets consist of several stacked stainless steel layers with embossed beads that seal the combustion chamber, oil and coolant passages. The outer layers act as springs and must keep the seal tight despite thermal expansion and engine vibration.
The sealing force of the beads depends on the thickness and mechanical properties of the layer: a change in hardness or thickness changes the load on the gasket. 3S supplies work-hardened AISI 301 full hard for the spring layers, as well as AISI 304, 430 and 441 for intermediate and shim layers, with tight tolerances to EN or ASTM and 100% dimensional control. Typical thicknesses from 0.10 to 0.30 mm, in widths up to 1250 mm, as coils or slit strip for stamping lines. The clean 2R/BA surface is a good base for subsequent coatings.
