Fuel cells and hydrogen

In fuel cells and electrolysers, thin stainless strip is pressed into bipolar plates that distribute the gases and conduct current. Thin gauges, flatness and a surface suitable for coatings are required.

Bipolar plates are stamped with fine channels and then coated: non-uniform thickness alters channel depth, contact pressure in the stack and coating adhesion. For these applications 3S supplies thin stainless strip from 0.05 mm, with good flatness and tight tolerances to EN or ASTM, verified by 100% dimensional control. The most widely used grades are AISI 316L, 304L and 304; the 2R/BA finish provides a clean, smooth surface suited to subsequent coatings; specific grades can be assessed on request. Widths up to 1250 mm and spools with parallel or traverse winding suit both prototypes and series stamping lines. Every batch is traceable, with a 3.1 certificate on request.

Frequently asked questions

What thicknesses are used for metallic bipolar plates?
Metallic bipolar plates use very thin strip, usually a few tenths of a millimetre or less. We supply thicknesses from 0.05 mm, with tight tolerances and 100% inspection.
Can you supply small quantities for prototypes?
Yes, we also consider limited supplies for trials and prototypes, as strip or sheet, so you can move to series production with the same material.
