AISI 304L – AISI 304L stainless steel strip

Description

AISI 304L (EN 1.4306, X2CrNi19-11) is the low-carbon version of AISI 304. Limiting carbon to 0.030% reduces the risk of chromium carbide precipitation during welding or heat treatment, and therefore of intergranular corrosion in heat-affected zones. It is preferred for welded components, heat exchangers, filters and parts for the chemical and food industries. Its higher nickel content compared with 304 also improves austenite stability and formability. 3S supplies AISI 304L precision strip mainly annealed 2R/BA and, on request, work-hardened 2H, as strip, narrow strips, spools and sheets from 0.05 to 0.70 mm (annealed) and from 0.05 to 2.50 mm (work-hardened).

Properties

  • Low carbon: resistant to intergranular corrosion after welding
  • Excellent weldability without post-weld annealing
  • Good formability and austenite stability
  • Suitable for chemical and food applications

Frequently asked questions

Request a quote
When should I choose 304L instead of 304?
When the component is welded or exposed to temperatures of roughly 450–850 °C. The low carbon content limits sensitisation and therefore intergranular corrosion. For non-welded parts, standard 304 is generally sufficient.
Can 304L be supplied as narrow strip?
Yes. 304L strip can be slit into narrow strips from 3 mm wide and supplied on spools or in coils to suit the feeding requirements of your production line.
