Duplex 2205 – Duplex 2205 stainless steel strip

Description

Duplex 2205 (EN 1.4462, X2CrNiMoN22-5-3, UNS S32205) is a stainless steel with a mixed austenitic and ferritic structure, with around 22% chromium, 5% nickel, 3% molybdenum and nitrogen. Its yield strength is about twice that of 304 and 316L, it has excellent resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking and higher pitting resistance than 316L. It allows thinner gauges for the same strength and is used in the chemical and petrochemical industry, offshore, desalination and structural components exposed to corrosion. 3S supplies Duplex 2205 precision strip in the annealed condition, as strip, narrow strips and spools from 0.05 to 0.70 mm.

Properties

  • Mechanical strength about twice that of 304
  • Excellent resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking
  • Higher pitting resistance than 316L
  • Slightly magnetic due to the ferritic phase

Frequently asked questions

Request a quote
Why choose Duplex 2205 instead of 316L?
When you need more mechanical strength and more resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking: 2205 has about twice the yield strength and better resists pitting and stress corrosion, often at a competitive cost thanks to its lower nickel content.
Is Duplex 2205 magnetic?
Yes, slightly: the structure is roughly half austenitic and half ferritic, and the ferritic phase makes it attracted to a magnet.
