254 SMO – 254 SMO stainless steel strip

Description

254 SMO (EN 1.4547, X1CrNiMoCuN20-18-7, UNS S31254) is a super-austenitic stainless steel with around 20% chromium, 18% nickel, 6% molybdenum and nitrogen. Its composition gives it far higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion than 316L and 904L, even in seawater, brines and hot chloride solutions, together with good mechanical strength. It is used in offshore and desalination plants, the chemical industry, pulp and paper and seawater heat exchangers. 3S supplies 254 SMO precision strip in the annealed 2R/BA condition, as strip, narrow strips and spools from 0.05 to 0.70 mm.

Properties

  • Very high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion
  • Suitable for seawater and hot chlorides
  • Higher mechanical strength than 316L
  • Austenitic structure, good weldability

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 254 SMO and 904L?
254 SMO has more molybdenum (6–7% versus 4–5%) and nitrogen: it resists pitting and crevice corrosion from chlorides better, for example in seawater. 904L, with more nickel and copper, remains the better choice for sulphuric and phosphoric acid.
Is 254 SMO available in thin gauges?
Yes, we supply it as annealed precision strip from 0.05 to 0.70 mm, including narrow strips and spools. Tell us the dimensions and quantity so we can check feasibility.
