What is stainless steel strip?

Stainless steel strip is stainless steel cold rolled to a thin gauge and wound into a coil. It is slit to the width you need and used to make bent, stamped, welded or wound parts.

Unlike a sheet, strip arrives already at the right size and in a continuous length: you put it on the machine and work it without cutting waste. Stainless steel strip is used to make springs and clips, gaskets, hose clamps, flexible hoses, flue liners, blades and stamped components for electronics, automotive and medical devices, as well as small parts to drawing.

3S supplies stainless steel strip in coils, slit strip, narrow strips from 3 mm and spools for automatic lines, as well as sheets cut to size up to 1000 mm. We work with our industrial partner R. Kretzschmann GmbH in Germany.

Stainless steel strip or precision strip?

“Standard” stainless strip is fine for many uses. When every part must be identical, you need precision strip.

Precision stainless steel strip has tight tolerances on thickness and width, regular edges, a controlled surface and mechanical properties that stay the same from coil to coil. It is what you need when the strip feeds a press or an automatic machine, or when the finished part must have an exact force or size, such as a spring or a gasket.

All our strip is precision strip, with tolerances to EN ISO 9445 and 100% dimensional inspection. You don’t need to buy tonnes: we also supply it for prototypes, samples and small batches.

Coils, narrow strips or spools?

  • Coils and slit strip: the most common format, in the width you need.
  • Narrow strips: strip from 3 mm wide, for small parts.
  • Spools: strip rewound on a reel, much longer, for automatic machines that run continuously.

Annealed or cold rolled (hard)?

After the grade, this is the most important choice, because it decides whether the strip is soft or hard.

  • Annealed (2R/BA): soft, easy to bend, deep draw and weld. The surface is bright. Used for gaskets, flexible hoses, flue liners, hose clamps and stamped parts.
  • Cold rolled (2H): hard and springy, it returns to shape after bending. Used for springs, clips and contacts. In AISI 301 we supply it up to strength class C1900.

If you are not sure which one you need, tell us what you have to make and we will recommend the right condition.

Which stainless steel to choose

GradeTypical use
AISI 304The most widely used stainless steel, for general purposes
AISI 316LBetter corrosion resistance: marine, chemical and food environments
AISI 301Springs, clips and contacts: 2H up to C1900
AISI 430Economical and magnetic, for decorative and indoor uses
AISI 321, 309S, 310SHigh temperatures: heating elements, furnaces, exhausts

Other grades available: 201, 304L, 305, 316, 316Ti, 410S, 441, 904L, Austenitic 1% Ni (200 series, type J4). See the full table in the Grades section.

Frequently asked questions

Request a quote
Do you sell stainless steel strip in small quantities?
Yes, we have no minimum order. We also supply a few kilos for prototypes, samples and small batches, as well as regular series supply.
How much does stainless steel strip cost?
The price depends on grade, thickness, width, finish and quantity. Send us these details, or simply tell us what you will use it for, and we will send you a quote within 24 hours.
What is the thinnest gauge available?
We supply stainless steel strip from 0.05 mm up to 2.50 mm thick. For other thicknesses just ask: we assess each case.
Is stainless steel strip magnetic?
Annealed 304 and 316 are practically non-magnetic. They become partly magnetic when cold rolled, like 301 in 2H condition. 430, on the other hand, is always magnetic.
Do you ship abroad?
Yes, we ship to Italy and throughout Europe.
Do you provide material certificates?
Yes, on request we provide a 3.1 inspection certificate to EN 10204 with chemical analysis and mechanical properties.

How to request a quote
